“Ata gungun” is a Yoruba word for a hot, coarsely ground dried chili pepper that is frequently used in Nigerian cooking. Because of its texture, it basically means “rough pepper”; it is regarded as a milder form of cayenne pepper and, when used sparingly, gives food a noticeable spicy kick. It is frequently found in pepper sauces, soups, and stews.
